Thank You Coalition for United Community Action-ORTC!

A BIG SHOUT OUT AND A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE COALITION FOR UNITED COMMUNITY ACTION-ORTC for selecting this humble and shocked Sun-Times retired columnist with an unexpected award.

YES, I SAID UNEXPECTED!

I was told last month by Carl Latimer, the longtime devoted President of the Coalition, that I had been selected to receive a special “Woman of the Decade/Legend of Print Media” award at their 41st annual dinner on June 7th 2013  at the Chicago Palmer House Hilton Grand Ballroom.

Well, I just about fainted and jokingly told Carl Latimer, “Wow! You must be kidding, and can such a long title even fit on a plaque?”

Latimer said something like,

“Hey, with all you have done for the African American community by giving us, and other Chicago communities and beyond, a real and dynamic voice through your years of working at the Sun-Times with the late gossip columnist Irv “Kup” Kupcinet and later through your very own column (aka Stella’s Column), you are most deserving.   You  faithfully wrote that “tell it like it ‘tis….(Yeah, I said it)  informative column, which covered everything including entertainment, politics, social/civic commentary, where to eat, who was/is sleeping with whom, make-ups, breakups, violence in the black community, domestic/child abuse and major scoops, etc., for nine years before shocking everyone by retiring last August.”

……….Well, he didn’t say all these exact words, but this is close enough…and I am sure he was thinking all of this in his head ….HA!  🙂

SO WHETHER FOLKS AGREE with this long title or not…this little colored girl out of Englewood is most grateful….after all, my wonderful gone- to- be- with God parents, Peter James & Mamie Lee Foster, taught their four kids to be thankful, grateful, spiritual and appreciative of all the good things bestowed on you in your lifetime because it didn’t have to happen!

OTHER DESERVING AWARDEES INCLUDE:

The Honorable John Cullerton, President of the Illinois State Senate; top contractors Joseph Scarpelli, Jon Pridmore and Shon Harris; Sun-Times reporter Maudlyne Ihejirika; The Chicago Defender’s Colonel Eugene F. Scott, U.S. Army-retired; college bound-high school athlete Jabari Parker; union leader Vince Sticca, and brilliant educator D’Andre J. Weaver.

THE HONORARY CHAIRMEN are Governor Pat Quinn, Secretary of State Jesse White, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Former President of Illinois State Sentate, Emil Jones.

Yeah, I said it….Stella in the City!
